Common Texas Hold Em’ Mistakes

by guestcontributor on July 12, 2011

Whether you are playing Texas holdem online, at the casino, or among friends, you may want to be careful not to make common mistakes that may cause you to play a bad hand or even cause you financial hardship. Holdem is a social game meant to entertain the players and bring together persons of common interest. Keeping in the spirit of playing your top game, you will want to review the following tips to avoid common mistakes, which might sour the game for you.

1.  Pursuing flushes and straights. This is one mistake that even seasoned players may have issues with. If luck is against you, going after flushes and straights can be detrimental to your game. If you are playing no limit Texas hold ‘em the chances of calling bets and landing a draw are slim.

2.  Placing too much value on your top pair. There is often a fine line between the point at which you need to fold and the point where you should decide to continue seeing bets. Whether you continue or call it a game depends on your experience, the other players, and the nature of your game. There is no definitive point at which you know to stop, it is mostly dependent on your particular situation.

3.  Bluffing on too many occasions. Not only does this give you a weakness by making you predictable, it leaves you vulnerable to being called by other players.  If your hands aren’t paying out but the hands of fellow players are, getting into the habit of bluffing will get you nowhere. Bluffing or making any plays out of frustration is never a good idea.

4.  Playing too few hands. Although many players will play too many hands instead of too few, some holdem beginners will make this mistake. For those looking for the perfect hand, playing fewer hands may seem like an attractive option, however, this will only leave you waiting for idealized card combinations, which may never show up in your hand. Finding a balancing point between playing to many or too few hands will help you improve your game.

5.  Losing your focus. This can be especially trying in casino settings. If there is television, alcoholic beverages and good company, finding a way to focus on the game may be difficult. If your money is on the line you should try to maintain a stable level of mental involvement in the game.

6.  Betting beyond your means. This goes not only for holdem players but for all poker players. You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again. Betting outside of your financial ability is liable to get not only yourself in trouble, but those who are close to you. Despite the thrill involved for some the seriousness of allowing the game to impact your family or professional life should be strictly considered. This also applies to entering games where the stakes are too high. If there are a low number of buy-ins you won’t want to take part in the play. Preserving the fun of holdem by keeping your finances stable is paramount to your continued play.
