Gambler’s fallacy is the notion that this is not the case; that there is some inherent chance of a different determination based on previous results. Outside of this notion there are a few betting schemes that, if employed correctly, can potentially yield positive results. The important thing to know about roulette, however, is that a balanced table will always (over time) default favor to the house. The first and most straight forward is the Martingale system. Most likely this system has crossed your mind at some point without you realizing it was an honored system. Starting in 18^th century France, the Martingale system worked by doubling the betting amount every time a loss occurred. Theoretically if the bet was always doubled then the inevitable win would re-accrue all the losses and the player would be able to start over from the value of the last win. Essentially you would double or nothing until you zeroed out. The problem with this is the exponential growth of the loss bets might add up to exceed the table limits or, worse yet, the pockets of the player. This would cause a very quick and ruthless downward spiral of money lost.

The Labouchère System worked on a similar idea, but with a delay mechanism spacing out the losses and wins so it was less likely to spiral so violently. The system works but taking a desired overall outcome and dividing it into a set of smaller stake bets. By working their way through the list linearly from both the front and the back until they arrive at their final determined number, players ease out the stress of simply tossing all their money on double zero to reach the desired goal. Losses are simply re-added to the front and back of the bet line and attempted to be regained. While a less brute-force method than the Martingale system, the Labouchère System does statistically favor the house over time (as with all roulette systems).

Lastly is the D’Alembert System, which seems geared towards smaller stake players. It essentially suggests that for every win a small increment is removed from the next bet, and for every loss a small increment is added. This results in a goal of statistically rounding out your bet to approach zero. It is also partially grounded in the Gambler’s Fallacy, being as it assume the results of your next bet based on the outcome of the previous bets. For example if you won, it gives statistical value to the next spin being a loss.

The truth of the matter is that roulette is a game that doesn’t really care if you play with a strategy or not. The best reason to use one is to help you keep track of your betting and optimize your chances of not taking a hit.

It all started with a man named Bradley Ruderman (currently serving ten years in federal prison for fraud) who managed a Beverly Hills hedge fund.  He embezzled upwards of $5 million from his clients, using a portion of it to pay off his losses in a series of high-stakes poker games between 2006 and 2009, in which a number of A-list actors were known to play.  Some of the big names cited were Tobey Maguire, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Leonardo DiCaprio.  The games were by invitation only, making for an exclusive guest list, and at a buy-in of $100,000, it’s no surprise.  But since the games were totally unlicensed and therefor illegal under California state law, the players had no legal right to receive winnings.  And now the investors want their money back.

By all rights, the actors (along with other players) should have no onus to return this money.  After all, they won’t get back any of the money they lost.  Unfortunately, because the gambling ring they participated in was illegal, the investors in Ruderman’s hedge fund have the leverage they need to try to recover at least a portion of their lost investment.  The Ruderman Capital Partners, headed by trustee Howard M. Ehrenberg, have now filed sixteen suits in total, with the largest aimed at Spiderman star Tobey Maguire, whom they allege owes a whopping $311,000.

Of course, the onus is on them to provide proof not only that the actors participated in this ring, but also that they won money from Ruderman.  However, it seems pretty unlikely that they would file suit without such evidence, so everyone involved in the gambling ring may be on the hook for a pretty steep payout.  But it gets worse; they could also face a $1,000 fine and six months in jail for each instance of gambling if a Los Angeles prosecutor decides to go after them in criminal court.  Of course, the Hollywood film industry has long been the bread and butter of the city, so going after the actors in this way seems pretty unlikely.  After all, they were just having some fun.

But the investors in Ruderman Capital Partners certainly don’t seem to feel that way and they are not content to chalk it up to a bad decision on their part.  They will almost certainly move forward with the suit and try to get whatever they can out of the A-list actors and other participants in this gambling ring, meaning that everyone involved could end up paying a lot more than they expected for a few friendly games of Texas Hold ‘Em.
